Case Study | SOGEDEP

Modernization of small and medium wood forestry harvesters

SOGEDEP, a manufacturer of forestry equipment, is a long-standing partner for whom we have provided technical solutions tailored to their clients’ needs.

Specializing in the sale and maintenance of forestry machines, SOGEDEP has gradually updated its machine range to comply with new regulatory requirements, particularly regarding emissions.

The SH15 machine, one of SOGEDEP’s flagship models, is a harvester equipped with the Perkins® 1104D-E44TA engine delivering 106 kW, compliant with Stage IIIA standards. Despite its success, this model no longer meets the limits imposed by evolving environmental regulations, prompting SOGEDEP to consider upgrading the machine.

In response to these requirements, SOGEDEP chose to integrate a more powerful engine compliant with Stage V standards for its new machines, the SH16 and SH20 models.

Project steps

1. Client needs analysis: We first analyzed the client’s power requirements while taking into account the technical specifications of the new machines for enhanced performance and productivity, ensuring they benefit from a larger harvesting head.

The previous SH15 model, equipped with a Stage IIIA Perkins® engine, still meets the expectations of many users, but a complete redesign was necessary to transition to more versatile machines like the SH16 and SH20. Our teams then proposed to the client the integration of a Stage V Perkins® engine perfectly suited to the needs of first thinning operations in hardwood and softwood plantations, especially in the narrowest planting areas.

This carefully considered integration proposal guarantees the preservation of technical performance characteristics for the most demanding tasks.

In addition to this integration, our teams also offered to supply the onboard electronics and essential software required for crane operation and control.

2. Installation and integration of Perkins Stage V engine: After a phase of technical validation and commercial approval, SECODI assisted SOGEDEP in integrating the Perkins 1204J-E44TTA engine, a 140 kW (190 hp) bi-turbo engine compliant with the latest Stage V standards, delivering a maximum torque of 815 Nm.

3. Over a period of three days, a series of tests were conducted to validate the machine’s performance and ensure its proper operation under real working conditions, particularly regarding engine cooling. Our teams carried out a level 3 validation covering numerous technical aspects of the engine and the machine, such as temperature, pressure, electrical tests, and verification of the emission control strategy (after-treatment), among others.

The project concluded with the validation and certification of the engine installation by SECODI, accompanied by a comprehensive audit report, ensuring that the machine complies with Stage V emission standards.

Customer feedback

“We are very satisfied with the performance of this Perkins 1204J-TTA engine. We especially appreciate its available torque as well as its low noise and vibration levels. For a 4-cylinder engine, that’s quite remarkable.”
